Large-scale Agricultural Acquisition and Sustainability

Welcome to the interdisciplinary research project by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the University of Greifswald and the GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies, Hamburg.

The phenomenon of so-called „landgrab" has lately received considerable media attention. The term encompasses public and private investment in purchase or lease of large-scale agricultural land in less developed countries.

The research-project aims at analysing the economical, legal and ethical aspects of large-scale land acquisitions in African target countries and their consequences for a sustainable economical, ecological and social development.
